SkyNRG is a global leader in Sustainable Aviation Fuels. Their mission is to build up sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) capacity for aviation to meet its 2050 net zero commitment and in doing so, significantly reduce the industry’s impact on our environment.
SkyNRG’s mission is to build up SAF capacity for aviation to meet its 2050 net zero commitment.
The current estimates are that the aviation industry’s emissions are will double by 2050. Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is the only way to significantly reduce aviation emissions in the foreseeable future.
Recently SkyNRG received an initial investment of € 175 million which will support SkyNRG’s next phase of growth, to develop and operate dedicated SAF production facilities, and help accelerate the aviation industry’s transition away from fossil aviation fuels.
Aviation fuels progress in the world, opening up new opportunities and partnerships. At the same time, we know that aviation needs to significantly reduce its carbon emissions, which harm our planet.
A few years ago Seed Processing Holland has started a cooperation with SkyNRG. This affiliate company of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and other prominent organisations has the core task to develop sustainable jet fuels.
SkyNRG uses sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) which reduces the lifecycle CO2 emissions by at least 75% compared to fossil jet fuel. It is the future of the aviation industry and they are working to support partners across the world to fly more sustainably.
One of the products for making this fuel is the plant Solaris, a special bred nicotine free tobacco variety bred by Sunchem Holding, Italy. The seeds contain around 33% oil. The solaris plant is grown on commercial scale in South Africa and is supported by Boeing, South African Airlines and Sunchem SA.
The seed pods that are produced need to be dried, threshed and cleaned (conditioned) after which the seeds can be pressed for oil. Because the need for biofuels is increasing, there will be a challenge in producing, drying, threshing and cleaning of large volumes of these seeds. Therefore Seed Processing Holland has teamed up with this project and designed a processing plant for these purposes. All the seed pods are now processed with SPH equipment!
