As the end-user Estonian Crop Research Institute (since 01.01.2023 part of the Centre of Estonian Rural Research and Knowledge) is a state research and development institute conducting research in breeding field crop seeds like barley, wheat and rye, agrotechnology, plant biotechnology and plant protection. To maintain agrobiodiversity, its main activities include breeding new varieties of crops, ensuring the conservation of registered varieties, preserving plant genetic resources, as well as producing and distributing certified seeds of different crops. The main goal is to increase the efficiency and competitiveness of agricultural production.
Local project leader Est-Doma OÜ is a supplier of measuring instruments, laboratory, technology and education equipment. The company was founded in 1996 and is part of the Doma Group in the Baltic States. Besides selling instruments or systems, the company offers technical service and is also a partner if the customer needs a more advanced system for a particular purpose. This project is an example of this role.
Est-Doma OÜ is impressed by how dedicated Seed Processing Holland was from the start. All preparations and planning were well thought out. Even the smaller details. SPH also showed the flexibility to make changes to meet customer expectations.
The installation was short and went smoothly and SPH’s specialists did an excellent job on site. It was clear that they were experienced and motivated to give their best.
All in all, the equipment, installation and overall planning and execution were of high quality.
Because the system has only recently been installed and the first season is still underway, the system has not yet been used at full capacity. However, the newly trained operators are already very satisfied and the test results meet expectations.
“Personally, I like it when the system is easy to operate, has quality and somehow improves the work of the user. The principle of the conditioned seed dryer is simple and Seed Processing Holland has managed to meet quality and safety standards. I am sure the Estonian Crop Research Institute will benefit from it!”
Rainer Sults, Project Manager at Est-Doma OÜ
The Estonian Crop Research Institute is expanding its facilities and capacities. Controlled seed drying was a necessity to ensure the goals of the expansion. For instance, the system had to be robust and durable, have low operating costs and meet safety criteria. Seed Processing Holland’s sustainable Rack Drying System, DBM-SP01 meets these requirements and the system’s principle of conditioned box seed drying is exactly what such a research institute needs!
This institute deals with seed breeding. As many crops are developed that they mature at the same time, a large quantity of different seeds needs to be dried simultaneously. It is beneficial to dry them immediately when they come from the field. However the quantities are small. This makes it difficult to organize the drying of breeding seeds in large industrial dryers, as there are significant losses and the seeds may get mixed with other seeds. Moreover, the temperatures in the dryers are so high that they can damage the seeds. Therefore, the idea arose to purchase a dedicated drying device with 1 or 2 drying chambers of suitable size. While exploring the available options, they came across Seed Processing Holland’s solution and realized that they actually needed a larger drying system.
The installed 20-chamber rack drying system enables Estonian Crop Research Institute to dry suitable quantities in parallel during peak hours independent of ambient weather conditions. The drying conditions, including temperature and air humidity, are perfectly suitable, giving them high-quality seeds that are healthy and viable.
